Oiling is Key to Maintaining the Longevity of Your Clock

oil

Just like regular oil changes extend the life of your car’s engine, regular clock oiling extends the life of your clock. Oiling your clock every three years will help prevent expensive clock repairs and ensure that your clock will last for the generations to come. Imagine never changing your car’s oil; it wouldn’t take long for the engine to seize. Without regular oiling your clock will end up requiring a major service, or possibly a new movement.

The good news is that our clock experts are here to help!  We have serviced many thousands of clocks and will keep your heirloom in tip top shape.  If you’re handy, we are happy to teach you how to oil it yourself and we have professional clock oiling kits available for purchase, with special synthetic clock oil in a syringe applicator.  Stop by Ye Olde Clock and Gift Shoppe in Dallas, PA or call us at 570.675.6507 for more information.

Is it four o’clock?

Clock-IIII_6Did you ever notice the number four on a clock with Roman Numerals is technically incorrect?  Traditionally, clocks dials feature “IIII” instead of “IV”.  Legend has it that a clock maker made a clock for a British King.  The King argued that the number four was incorrect.  To appease the King and not risk offense, the clock maker remade the dial with the numeral “IIII”.  Other clock makers followed suit and now it is the traditional way to make clocks.

How did grandfather clocks get their name?

The term “grandfather clock” was never applied until after 1875 when a song written by Henry C. Work called “Grandfather’s Clock” was published. It became a very popular song in its day and the sheet music reportedly sold over 800,000 copies, quite a number in those days.

Some of the lyrics were as follows:clockcomp

My grandfather’s clock was too large for the shelf,
So it stood ninety years on the floor;
It was taller by half than the old man himself,
Though it weighed not a penny weight more.
It was bought on the morn of the day he was born,
And always his treasure and pride;
But it stopp’d short never to go again
When the old man died.

In watching it’s pendulum swing to and fro,
Many hours he spent while a boy;
And in childhood and manhood the clock seemed to know
And to share both his grief and his joy.
For it struck twenty four when he entered the door,
With a blooming and beautiful bride;
But it stopp’d short never to go again
When the old man died.

It rang an alarm in the dead of the night
An alarm that for years had been dumb;
And we knew that his spirit was pluming for flight
That his hour of departure had come.
Still the clock kept the time,
With a short and muffled chime,
As we silently stood by his side;
But it stopp’d short never to go again
When the old man died.

All About Moon Dials

painted moon dial

Moon dials are a beautiful feature on most Grandfather clocks, but did you know they were integral to the lives of our forefathers?   Before printed calendars were readily available, they planted crops and planned their lives by the phases of the moon.  The numbered arch above the moon dial indicates the 29 1/2 days of each lunar month, which differs from our standard calendar month.  The rotation of the moon disc shows the position of the moon on that given day.  Notice the half globes at the bottom of the moon dial.  The left globe is the Western Hemisphere and the right globe is the Eastern Hemisphere.  The moon will pass through it’s cycle, behind these two globes, telling the phase of the moon.  Once you set your moon dial to the current moon phase, it will remain accurate as long as the clock is kept running.  Happy moon gazing! Westminster Chime Clock Melody

west melody

Did you know the familiar Westminster chime clock melody of your grandfather or mantel clock has a very long history?  The Westminster chimes are the same notes first used in the University Church two of St. Mary in Cambridge, England and in 1859, selected for the Victoria Clock Tower in the House of Parliament in London.  The hour is still struck on the famous old “Big Ben” bell after the four famous phrases have been played on the smaller bells.  Your clocks work on the same premise.  The melody is played by one set of hammers on chime rods or tubes and the hourly strike is played on another set of chime rods or tubes.  The music was originally inspired by a phrase from Handel’s “I Know That My Redeemer Liveth”.  The words and music of the Westminster Chime were arranged by William Crotch in 1793.

Lord through this hour,

Be Thou our guide

So, by Thy power

No foot shall slide
