New Cuckoo Clock Setup Instructions

  1. Open the back of the clock and remove the orange clips from the bellow, the paper from the gong and replace the back of the clock.
  2. Remove the bag and the wire that is securing the chains.
  3. Unlatch the cuckoo door.
  4. Hang the clock on the wall.  A good size nail in a stud at an angle works best.  Make sure the clock is flush against the wall at all times.  If no stud, use an anchor, available at any hardware store.
  5. Hang the pendulum on the wire look.  Make sure the pendulum does not rub any part of the case when it comes out of the bottom slot.  It should automatically be in the middle.
  6. Hang one weight on each hook.  Weights should be the same weight and size.  When winding the clock, do not help the weight or cup the weight with your hand.  Pull each chain straight to the top.
  7. Never wind the clock when it is about to cuckoo or during a cuckoo cycle.  Always wait until it is finished.
  8. Set the pendulum in motion and listen for an even “tick tock”.  If the “tick tock” is not even, tilt the clock to the right or the left until it is even.  Important! Do not use your eyes to level the clock.
  9. To regulate for time keeping: check the time daily and regulate at the same time.  Remove the pendulum.
  10. If the clock is running fast, gently slide the pendulum leaf/disc downwards.  (lower is slower)
  11. If the clock is running slow, gently slide the pendulum leaf/disc upwards.
  12. To set the time, use the minute hand or big hand only.  Stop every half hour to let the bird cuckoo one time and every hour to let the bird cuckoo the hour.  Never go backwards and never move the hour hand or small hand.
  13. Your cuckoo clock should be serviced every 3 to 5 years depending on your environment.  If dusty conditions, service every 3 years.

Today we are featuring our friend Brian from BK Wood Designs.  We carry a collection of his beautiful wood boxes, pens and wine bottle stoppers.  Here’s a little more about him, in his own words.

“Hello, my name is Brian, and I run a small hobby woodworking shop in beautiful Northeastern Pennsylvania. I have always been a huge fan of nature and love to hike or mountain bike any chance I get. There’s nothing better than hiking through the woods, and you sit down to take a break on a fallen tree over a gently flowing stream and just listen to nature. It’s a sound that happens day and night, and never stops.

With my love for nature comes a love for log homes, and rustic furniture. This is why I got into woodworking. using natural elements adds a beauty that you can’t get from synthetic compounds. Take Spalting, for instance, which is technically wood starting to rot. This amazing process adds beautiful colors to wood you will never be able to re- create. I love to work with figured and contrasting woods.”

Spotlight On: Tokyobay Watches

time-well-spent

Established in 1991, TOKYObay is a San Francisco designed watch and accessory brand born out of a collaboration between two talented designers from two very different backgrounds. Jun Kobayashi, from Tokyo, and Dory Isaacs, originally from the UK and now living in the San Francisco Bay Area, came together as two friends with time on their minds.

The East meets West watch and accessory line is infused with everything from Jun’s days as a bassist in the popular niche group Flower Travelin’ Band to Dory’s upbringing in England as a passionate fashion student and ceramic studio owner. The result is a constantly evolving, unique fusion of Japanese minimalism and fashion-focused sensibilities.

Always stylish, well designed, full of color with good times in mind, TOKYObay is time well spent when dressing for the everyday.

“We came together over twenty years ago to create something different using our individual strengths and backgrounds in design and product development. We find continual inspiration in our work by combining new materials sourced from different countries and integrating unexpected textures and metal finishes. By experimenting with new looks and colors each season, we try to consistently evolve the line by mixing various eras with modern elements to bring both a familiar yet distinct look.”

September Birthstone: Sapphire

Photographed for the CIBJO project from the Dr. Eduard J. Gubelin Collection.

Sapphire, the birthstone of September, is most desired in its pure, rich blue color but is present in almost every color including pink, yellow and green. In the Middle Ages the gem was believed to protect those close to you from harm and also represented loyalty and trust.
