Spotlight On: Himalayan Salt Lamps

in the spotlightIMG_9607

These beautiful lamps are made of natural crystal salt that is mined from underground salt mines in the foothills of the Himalayan Mountains.  The crystal salt is hundreds of millions of years old, and as a result, has special properties and high mineral content.  The heat from the bulb causes the salt to emit negative ions.  These negative ions bond with the pollutants in the air (positive ions) and neutralize them.  The newly bonded ions become heavier and fall to the ground, removing them from air circulation.  Concisely, these lovely Himalayan Salt Lamps cleanse the air naturally, plus they’re beautiful!  Stop by The Shoppe to choose your one of a kind lamp.

Here Comes the Bride

Did you know on average 7,000 couples get married every day?

The bride stands to the groom’s left during a Christian ceremony, because in bygone days the groom needed his right hand free to fight off other suitors.

Legend says single women will dream of their future husbands if they sleep with a slice of groom’s cake under their pillows.

Ancient Greeks and Romans thought the veil protected the bride from evil spirits. Brides have worn veils ever since.

The groom carries the bride across the threshold to bravely protect her from evil spirits lurking below.

Seventeen tons of gold are made into wedding rings each year in the United States!

These customs and superstitions are just a few of the many things we do to celebrate weddings.  Another is to purchase a keepsake to commemorate the love of the bride and groom.  We search the world for unique, meaningful wedding, anniversary and engagement gifts to offer to our customers.  And, we are happy to personalize any gift with a free customized inscription.

Famous Clocks from Around the World: Metronome in New York City

Join us for our new series: a tour of Famous Clocks from Around the World.

Our first stop has been described as the world’s most confusing clock, right on the south side of 14th St. between Broadway and 4th Ave., at the southeast corner of Union Square in New York City.   It’s a great example of why conceptual artists do not often get commissioned to design clockmetronomes!  Metronome is big and odd, but interesting to look at. Over one hundred feet high, it fills the outside wall of a building that faces Union Square.  Plumes of white steam occasionally puff outpuff of a hole (“The Infinity”) at the center of a bullseye of 24 carat gold-covered bricks (“The Vortex”), topped by a giant hand (“The Relic”).  Most of these features have nothing to do with telling time, except for the puffs, which are especially big at noon and midnight.

The clock part of Metronome, “The Passage,” is a set of fifteen large digital numbers that tick with precision to a hundredth of a second.  They display time in a 24 hour format.   The seven digits on the left side show the time in military time.  The seven digits from the right display the amount of time remaining in a 24 hour day.  The center digit represents hundredths of a second.  Now
you see why it’s so difficult to read.  It’s so unique that many New Yorkers do not even realize that Metronome is a clock, even though it’s been ticking away since 1999.

June Birthstones: Pearl, Moonstone and Alexandrite

june birthstonesJune is a special month, as it has multiple birthstones. Traditionally, pearls are known to be the birthstone for the month of June.  Gemologists have also recognized both moonstone and Alexandrite as modern gemstones for June.

Pearls are the only gemstones that are found in the sea, and have been used in a number of cultures to help women connect with their “inner goddess”. No wonder we’ve seen fashion icons such as Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn and Grace Kelly wear these beautiful gems. They are believed to bring enlightenment and inspiration and hold so much beauty and positivity that they act as reminders that you are beautiful inside and out.

Moonstones are beautiful, sacred stones to many cultures. They received their name by the Romans in ancient times, who believed that the stone’s appearance changed with the changing phases of the moon. Once cut and polished, moonstones have an optical phenomenon known as adularescence, a shimmery show of light.   Moonstone is highly associated with one’s emotions,  inspiration and feelings of love. They help in bringing good fortune, enhance intuition and offer protection. It is also believed to be most powerful to use when there’s a full moon!

The rare Alexandrite is another birthstone for June.  It’s a relatively modern gem and was first discovered in Russia in 1831 during the reign of its namesake, Czar Alexander II.   Alexandrite has an extremely rare chrysoberyl with chameleon-like qualities. Its color is a lovely green in both daylight and fluorescent light and it changes color to a purplish red in incandescent light.

How were birthstones chosen?

illustration set of precious stones of different cuts and colors

Almost everyone knows their birthstone, but have you ever thought about how they were originally selected?  The first known reference originated in the book of Exodus in the Old Testament of the Bible.  It is written that the Hebrew high priest had a breastplate with twelve specific stones mounted in four rows, one stone representing each of Israel’s tribes. In the first row there was ruby, topaz and beryl, the second row had turquoise, sapphire and emerald, the third row jacinth, agate and amethyst and in the fourth row there was chrysolite, onyx and jasper. They were all mounted in gold filigree settings, one for each of the names of the sons of Israel, each engraved with the name of one of the twelve tribes. (Exodus,Chapter 39:9-14, New International Version)

Throughout history, many have believed that gemstones hold special powers for those that wear them. In the 8th and 9th centuries, gemstones were believed to be connected to the twelve apostles. Since that time, the twelve gemstones have been related to zodiac signs and birth months. It is believed that the actual wearing of birthstones more than likely originated in Poland around the 15th and 16th century. Some believed that the powers of a gemstone for a particular month were heightened by the wearer. For this reason, it is believed that people wore the different birthstones for each month hoping to achieve the full effects of that particular stone.

In 1912 the Jewelers of America organized an official list that would connect each month with a particular stone.  This list is still used today to identify the stone that represents the month.

Stop back each month to see our post about the birthstone of the month!
