Cuckoo…Cuckoo…

So why did the Black Forest Artisans choose a cuckoo bird to be the centerpiece of their clocks? The common cuckoo, native to Europe, had long served as a natural marker of time, a welcome harbinger of Spring whose familiar calls denoted the coming of the new season and warmer weather. Writing eloquently on the cuckoo in his 1849 book Natural History: Birds, English naturalist Philip Henry Gosse described the joy felt upon hearing the first coos of the season:

“There are few who do not feel a thrill cuckooof pleasure when it falls upon their ear. But more especially when, for the first time in the season, it is heard in a lovely Spring morning, mellowed by distance, borne softly from some thick tree, whose tender, and yellow-green leaves, but half-opened, are as yet barely sufficient to afford the welcome stranger the concealment he loves. At such a time it is peculiarly grateful; for it seems to assure us that indeed, winter is past.”

Over the centuries since it first emerged from the Black Forest, the cuckoo clock has remained largely unchanged.

Where did Regulator Clocks get their names?

regulatorUntil the 19th century, clocks were handmade by individual craftsmen and were very expensive. The rich ornamentation of pendulum clocks of this period indicates their value as status symbols of the wealthy. The clockmakers of each country and region in Europe developed their own distinctive styles. By the 19th century, factory production of clock parts gradually made pendulum clocks affordable by middle-class families.
During the Industrial Revolution, daily life was organized around the home pendulum clock. More accurate pendulum clocks, called regulators, were installed in places of business and used to schedule work and set other clocks. The most accurate, known as astronomical regulators, were used in observatories for astronomy, surveying, and celestial navigation. Beginning in the 19th century, astronomical regulators in naval observatories served as primary standards for national time distribution services.  From 1909, US National Bureau of Standards (now NIST) based the US time standard on Riefler pendulum clocks, accurate to about 10 milliseconds per day.

Is it four o’clock?

Clock-IIII_6Did you ever notice the number four on a clock with Roman Numerals is technically incorrect?  Traditionally, clocks dials feature “IIII” instead of “IV”.  Legend has it that a clock maker made a clock for a British King.  The King argued that the number four was incorrect.  To appease the King and not risk offense, the clock maker remade the dial with the numeral “IIII”.  Other clock makers followed suit and now it is the traditional way to make clocks.

Our Cuckoo Clocks are Handmade and Handpainted in the Black Forest

portfolio3Anton Schneider Cuckoo Clocks are crafted by hand, made by the heart.  Anton Schneider began producing cuckoo clocks in 1848 in his farmhouse in Schonach. The Schneider family business is now in the 6th generation and has been producing high value cuckoo clocks at its current location since 1952.  In the years between 1952 and 1985 the modern factory building was extended in 7 periods of building. Their clock factory is today among the most modern and largest cuckoo clock factories in the Black Forest. In spite of this, the old tradition of doing valuable carving work by hand has been maintained and in the last few years even greatly improved. This required intensive training of young woodcarvers under their direction.  Learn more at http://cuckooclocks-schneider.com/the-cuckoo-experience/

How did grandfather clocks get their name?

The term “grandfather clock” was never applied until after 1875 when a song written by Henry C. Work called “Grandfather’s Clock” was published. It became a very popular song in its day and the sheet music reportedly sold over 800,000 copies, quite a number in those days.

Some of the lyrics were as follows:clockcomp

My grandfather’s clock was too large for the shelf,
So it stood ninety years on the floor;
It was taller by half than the old man himself,
Though it weighed not a penny weight more.
It was bought on the morn of the day he was born,
And always his treasure and pride;
But it stopp’d short never to go again
When the old man died.

In watching it’s pendulum swing to and fro,
Many hours he spent while a boy;
And in childhood and manhood the clock seemed to know
And to share both his grief and his joy.
For it struck twenty four when he entered the door,
With a blooming and beautiful bride;
But it stopp’d short never to go again
When the old man died.

It rang an alarm in the dead of the night
An alarm that for years had been dumb;
And we knew that his spirit was pluming for flight
That his hour of departure had come.
Still the clock kept the time,
With a short and muffled chime,
As we silently stood by his side;
But it stopp’d short never to go again
When the old man died.

When is a clock not really a clock?

dutch clock

When is a clock not really a clock? When it’s a timepiece. The word “clock” was derived from the Dutch word “glock” which means bell. The term clock was then applied to those timepieces which “struck a bell”. Therefore “clocks” that do not strike or chime are technically called timepieces.
